My people, nothing says “Change” like a New Year. We make changes around us and even draw up some New Year “Goals and Plans” to take full advantage of the year. So I decided to come up with an article that might help you with something – getting a new smartphone. Afterall, one or two of our New Year goals might be linked to technology. I sure know mine are! So if you’re trying to cop a new phone for yourself or your shopping for someone, here’s your guide.
OK. Set. Leggoo!
Before anything though, I’ll admit that there is probably no such thing as the PERFECT smartphone. What truly matters is getting one that suits you or compliments your style and, you know, agrees with your pocket. Also, while some details in this guide are based on my experience, others were gotten from trusted tech sources.
For those looking for something, my choice is the Nokia 3. Sturdily built with an Aluminium frame and a plastic rear, this 5” HD phone feels light and premium in hand. It has an 8MP back and front camera. It runs a stock (clean) version of Android 7.1 and has been confirmed to receive updates for Android Oreo. A quad-core MediaTek M6737 with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage keeps things running and a 2650mAh battery supplies the juice. And oh, did I forget to mention it is 4G LTE ready? An sweet choice for those on a budget and you can buy here.
If you feel the Nokia 3 isn’t for you or you want a bit more power and have a couple more thousand to spare, my mid-range choice is the Huawei Honor 6X. The Honor 6X is a 5.5″ Full-HD beast that comes with a dual camera setup of 12MP & 2MP while the front is an 8MP shooter. It is powered by a Kirin 655 octa-core processor with four cores clocked at 2.1GHz (with the rest clocked at 1.7GHz). It also comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage which can be expanded to 128GB. On the software side of things, we get Android 7.0 with EMUI 5.0 (Huawei’s mobile skin). It’s 4G ready and has a 3340mAh battery. Although, this is one phone you’ll have to handle to care as JerryRigEverything has shown that this phone is pretty fragile. A simple case however should fix that. You can buy the Honor 6X here. If you need that case I talked about, you can get that here or here.
Finally, if you’re looking for something more… premium as per big boy or big girl, my top choice will be the Tecno Phantom 8. Tecno’s flagship device of the year (2017) is a beauty to behold with its “diamond fire” design which instantly stands out over the the metallic designs competitors are still touting. It’s Full-HD 5.7″ screen is reportedly vibrant and rich with colours. It’s biggest selling point is perhaps the dual camera system Tecno has put in place which is a regular 12MP shooter and a 13MP telephoto camera allowing you to zoom on objects without loosing quality. The selfie camera is a nice 20MP shooter. Under the hood, there is an octa-core MediaTek P25 processor clocked at 2.6GHz with 6GB of RAM. You also get 64GB of storage which is expandable by SDCard. The battery capacity is 3500mAh. You can buy here.
Any Tablet recommendations?
If you’re in the market for something cute, decent and cheap, then I recommend the Chuwi HI10 Plus. If you’re done laughing at the name, I think you’ll be pretty impressed by this guy. The HI10 Plus falls in the category of 2-in-1 PCs also called Tablet PCs. It has a 10.8″ Full-HD IPS screen which isn’t common with computers in it’s class. It’s powered by an Intel Cherry Trail X5 Z8350 processor clocked at 1.44Ghz. It comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage (similar spec’d PCs come with half the RAM and storage) which can be expanded to 128GB through a card. On the path of connectivity, you get USB Type-C, micro HDMI, Bluetooth and all those good stuffs. Finally, you’ll be pleased to know that this PC has a dual boot system allowing users to switch between Windows 10 and Android 5.1 (which sadly, can’t be upgraded). Not exactly a new feature but it’s a nice addition. It comes with a 8400mAh battery. The HI10 Plus is definitely no powerhouse but it should offer enough power for casual PCs users and students with a few extras. And all of these can be yours for the price of a smartphone! You can buy here. Also, you might need to buy a keyboard since it sadly doesn’t ship with one. You can buy a keyboard here.
